Logged into your WordPress dashboard lately and seen a scary warning about outdated PHP? You’re not alone, and it’s not something to panic about. Here’s the quick version.
What is PHP?
It’s one of the languages WordPress runs on, the engine room stuff you never see. Like any software, older versions eventually stop getting security updates, which is what that warning is flagging.
Why can’t I just click update?
If your website is custom built and a few years old, there’s a good chance the code was written for the PHP version of the time. Newer PHP versions drop support for some of that older code, so simply switching versions can break your site: layouts shift, features stop working, sometimes worse.
So it’s less “flick a switch” and more “the underlying theme needs to be brought up to date first.”
